Yesterday, I got a chance to attend the screening of the movie After Earth starring Will and Jaden Smith. I’m a sucker for a good movie and this movie was surprisingly good. I say ‘surprisingly’ because much of the internet chatter said this was just another version of I Am Legend, another one of my favorite movies. While, I love I Am Legend, I wasn’t interested in seeing another version of the movie. The talk was that the only 2 people in the entire movie was Jaden and Will, however that was not the case.
A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.
After Earth was quite entertaining from beginning to end, there was drama, action and even some comical moments. I found myself wanting to fast forward to the end of the movie because I was so anxious to see what was going to happen next. Besides the action probably my favorite part of the movie was the dynamics shown between a father and his son. This was truly Jaden’s breakout role, he showed that he is truly a chip off the old block. After Earth lands in theaters tomorrow (May 31) and definitely a must see.
